Rochester Hospitals Unite to Defeat a Common Foe: C. difficile
A few years ago, the main hospitals in this city, like many across the country, were struggling with rising rates of illness caused by a particularly ferocious bacterium: Clostridium difficile.

Patients would lie sick in hospital rooms for days, fighting off the severe diarrhea that the pathogen caused. Others who had been admitted for different reasons would become infected, too.
